Introduction | | |
Orthopaedic rheumatology is an important and well-grown subspecialty of orthopaedics. It was started with a purpose to cover medical aspects of ortho-rheumatological problems but now expanding scope to cover surgical ortho-rheumatological problems. Ortho-rheumatology, being rapidly evolving medico-surgical specialty, is a panacea for the orthopaedic surgeons dealing with ortho-rheumatological ailments.
Defining Ortho-rheumatology
Orthopaedic rheumatology is subspecialty of Orthopaedics which mainly deals with medico-surgical conditions involving joints, soft tissues, and allied connective tissue disorders.[1] That means, Ortho-Rheumatology is not restricted to rheumatoid arthritis (as presumed by many Orthopedic Surgeons and Medical Professionals) but it covers most of the chunk of day-today orthopaedic practice.
Scope of Ortho-rheumatology
As per some literature, Ortho-Rheumatology encompasses a wide range of ailments with their scientific, clinical, treatment modality (therapeutic/surgical), and experimental information.[2] Looking to its wide range, it is difficult to define the boundary of the scope of Ortho-Rheumatology practice. It starts from all kinds of arthritis such as rheumatoid, gout, osteoarthritis, reactive arthritis, and psoriotic arthritis. Metabolic issues include osteoporosis, regenerative medicines, and so on.
Ortho-rheumatology provides scope not only to learn about various Orthobiologics but also to learn stem cell therapy, regenerative therapy, and even molecular therapy. Surgical Ortho-rheumatology is not restricted to conventional osteotomies and arthroplasty but have gone far off to the level of surgeries using biocomposites, regenerative cells, stem cells, osteoblasts, chondroblast, and so on.[3]
Ortho-rheumatology in India
Ortho-rheumatology practice is being done in India since time immemorial but due to unavailability of valid platform (e.g., Association/Journals), most of the works remained unrecognized. While searching the literature, the author got to know about two platforms working exclusively on ‘Ortho-Rheumatology’ in India: one is ‘Indian Orthopaedic Rheumatology Association (IORA)’[1] and other is ‘Orthopaedic Rheumatology Sub-specialty of Indian Orthopaedic Association’.[4] So it is pertinent to have a word about IORA and some other platforms.
Orthopaedic Rheumatology Association (IORA)
This association was born 13 years ago in 2009 under the guidance and patronage of the Legendary/Father figure: Prof. S.S. Jha of Patna and Founder Secretary General Prof. Manish Khanna of Lucknow. Since then, the association gradually expanded in terms of activity and membership. Finally, the IORA was registered and then had its subsequent President, Secretary, and other executive body. Now IORA is a well-grown association with more than 300 life members. The association is involved in organizing various academic activities (conferences, seminars, workshops, fellowship program, etc.) throughout the year. One mega event of academic activity is Annual Conference of IORA known as ‘IORACON’. Over the period of time, a decision was taken that the IORACON must not be restricted to National boundary but should go beyond it by organizing Biennial International Congress of Orthopaedic Rheumatology (ICOR). Accordingly, the 13th Biennial International Congress of Orthopaedic Rheumatology (ICOR) was organized for the first time in ‘City of Joy’ by the Indian Orthopaedic Rheumatology Association (IORA) under the aegis of West Bengal Orthopaedic Association (WBOA) in collaboration with ESI-PGIMSR, ESIC Medical College, Joka, Kolkata from 17 to 19 June 2022. It was a grand success. The IORA is having its own Journal, i.e., ‘International Journal of Orthopaedic Rheumatology’.[5] It is an indexed journal providing scope to share knowledge related to Ortho-Rheumatology by reading/publishing papers. IORA has started fellowship in Ortho-Rheumatology which is another avenue for young Orthopaedic Surgeons.[6]In toto, IORA provides a lot of avenues to upgrade knowledge which in turn helps to flourish the orthopaedic practice of an individual.
Apart from the IORA, the ‘Orthopaedic Rheumatology Sub-specialty of Indian Orthopaedic Association’ is also working hard to promote knowledge and practice in Ortho-Rheumatology.
Take Home Point! | | |
Ortho-rheumatology, being rapidly evolving medico-surgical specialty, is a panacea for orthopaedic surgeons dealing with ortho-rheumatological ailments. Knowledge in this sub-specialty will further enhance their busy surgical practices. We advocate to go through the available literature for further update in Ortho-rheumatology.[1],[2],[3],[4],[5],[6],[7]
